Delivery Window Design

02

Designed a food pickup window, taking into account human-centered design as well as aesthetics.

The design of the delivery window included the delivery location, the drip/spillage tray, the LED signage, the mounting of the motors and sensors, as well as the overall aesthetic design of the enclosure. While I was not initially given this project, after completing all my other projects I created a mockup for a new design that convinced my manager to give me ownership over the entire delivery window assembly.

The primary goals of the design were to improve accessibility to the pickup area while preserving visibility to the inside of the enclosure. To comply with food safety standards all exposed materials in the system needed to be food-grade rated as well as fully closed off from the outside.

The design of the LED signage was achieved through laser-etched acrylic with lighting on either end and messaging/symbols that could not use text. Due to the location of the system, the installation would be viewed by many people who do not speak English, and thus the signage needed to be universal and primarily image-based.

Both the ergonomics of the pickup window and the signage required human-centered design, and the design was finalized after many trials with mostly random sampling.

The system has now been installed in Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas at the Dominique Ansel bakery.

Redesigned pickup window

The previous pickup window was not easy to pick up the item from, as those with larger hands would struggle to hold the item and would be at higher risk of spilling something. The design also covered a large portion of the front viewing area and was the most prominent part of the enclosure. My redesign aimed to solve these two issues while still providing enough space to house the motors, signage, and sensors.

The Final Installation:

The LED signage was tested through multiple iterations both for the graphic design of the icons as well as the method by which the sign would be lit up. A few of these tests (with a near finalized icon) are shown.

The design of the icon was iterated on by creating a test that could be given to those who did not know what the product was and without any instruction to see if it could be misread or lead to human error. While it would not be possible to completely avoid—and precautions were built in—the goal was to minimize spillage and as a result more maintenance and cleaning than necessary.
